Business Central 2026 Release Wave 1 (BC28) – Item Variant Pictures Feature

Dynamics 365 Business Central 2026 release wave 1 (BC28) introduces a new preview feature that allows users to add pictures to item variants. This enhancement helps businesses easily identify different product options such as color, size, or style.

Overview

In earlier versions of Dynamics 365 Business Central, users could add only one picture to an item, even if the product had multiple variations. However, many products come in different options such as color, size, or style—for example, a T-shirt available in several colors.
With the Business Central 2026 release wave 1 (BC28) update, users can now assign a separate image to each item variant, making it much easier to visually distinguish between different product variations.
The new feature allows users to store and manage pictures for individual item variants directly from the Item Variant Card. A dedicated Picture Fact Box has been introduced where users can import, capture, export, or delete images for each variant. This means that different variants of the same items such as red, blue, or black versions—can now display their own images, improving product identification and reducing the risk of selecting the wrong variant.
⚠️ Note: This feature is currently available as a preview feature, which means it is intended for testing purposes and may change before the final release. It is not recommended for use in production environments yet.

Add a Picture to an Item Variant

First, open the Item Card and select the Variants action.
From the list of available variants, choose the variant you want to update

and open the Item Variant Card.





On this page, you will find the Picture FactBox, which allows you to manage images for that specific variant.
Within the Picture FactBox, you can perform several actions depending on your needs:
  • Import – Upload an image file from your device
  • Take – Capture a picture using your device camera
  • Delete – Remove the current image
  • Export – Download and save the existing image
These options give users flexibility to easily manage and update variant images directly within the system.
Select Import.

Important Note

This feature is currently available as a preview feature in Business Central 2026 release wave 1. Preview features are intended for testing and feedback purposes and may change before the official release. Therefore, they should not be used in production environments yet.
