Triggering D365 F&O Workflow Submission from an External System via API

Hi everyone,

I have a requirement to trigger a D365 F&O workflow submission from an external system using a Custom Service.

What is the correct way to implement this, and are there any blogs or official documentation you would recommend?

    Hello,

    As far as I know, you can leverage business events. Some are available OOB; otherwise, you can create new ones. These events can be exposed via Power Automate. You can trigger an external system, which then uses Power Automate to call the business event and run processes in D365FO (e.g., confirm a sales order).

    You can use Workflow::activateFromWorkflowType(). Use cross-references to find practical examples in the standard application, e.g. 
    in AssetLeaseWFTypeSubmitManager class.
     
    Business events won't help you. You'd use them if you wanted to get notified about events in F&O, but they have nothing to do with the question about how to start a workflow from a custom service.
