Unable to delete financial dimension

Dear experts,,

I have added a new financial dimension in production environment "Itemgroup" then finance team they asked to not use this financial dimension, we are currently in the setup and configuration phase, the financial dimension was linked to advance rule structure.

We have removed it from advance rule structure and we are currently trying to delete it but we were unable to delete it or deactivate it, there is no inactive button.

any help in this issue please.

Hello,

Suspend all your financial dimension's value, this blocks the system posting data with this dimension.

Probably, you cannot delete because somewhere the financial dimension is used as default into a master data.

Try to check and clean all the master data with default value concerning your financial dimension, then try to delete it.

Thank you for the reply.

The case as following :

- There is no values in the FD.

- The financial dimension created newly and was linked to account structure and we have remove it from it.

- No transactions at all yet.

Do you have any tool that let us know were it is link, since we search all related functions but we could not find.

Hi,

Can you confirm you had dimension values before that are now deleted for the Item group dimension? In case it was used before, there are records inserted in the table DimensionAttributeSetItem and/or DimensionAttributeValueSetItem. These are reference tables and prevent you from deleting the financial dimension.

Do I understand correctly that you are not live yet? If so, you can consider restoring a backup with point in time. You then only need to know the moment that the dimension was added. Other configuration that has been added after that point in time will then also be lost.

No values were added to the financial dimension at all, it was just linked to account structure and i remove it from it.

any other solution rather than restoring database, sine i have to repeat everything.

Hello,

If there are no values, it means this is impossible that the financial dimension is tied to a master data or a transaction.

Hence, it's strange, you are suppose to delete from the account structure and then delete the financial dimension.

I did a test in a contoso environement and it work. Try to see if you can follow this process:

1. Open account structure and enter in edit mode:

2. At the line level select the financial dimension to remove from the structure:

3. Activate the new version and then try to delete your financial dimension:

Hi @AS-27070328-0,

You can’t delete the financial dimension because once it is created and assigned to an account structure, the system generates references in core dimension framework tables (such as DimensionAttribute, DimensionAttributeValue, DimensionAttributeValueSet, and DimensionAttributeValueCombination)

These relationships make it part of the ledger structure, and for data integrity and audit reasons, D365 does not allow it to be deleted only removed from the account structure to stop further use.

In my previous reply, I mentioned two tables that are part of the validation to allow deleting the financial dimension. Can you check if there are records in these tables related to the dimension?

In case a point-in-time restore is not preferred, you need to check if you can delete records from these tables with a custom script. Note that Microsoft blocked direct editing of several Dimension related tables to ensure data consistency, so not sure if this is feasible.
