Importing in

ReportReport

Hi all,

I hope I am on the correct forum. I have a customer that uses Dynamics. They want to export numbers out of our ERP to import in so they can do their financials in Dynamics. Is there a template format that I can follow to write a custom report for them to use so they don't have to do any cutting and pasting or move/add columns? Or just a list of the columns and definitions to I get it right the first time?

Best,
Sonny

    Hi Sonny,

There isn't a default custom report in BC. If the customer is just loading journal entries they can load data in a few different ways but it would all be based on copying and pasting. I'd recommend they test or work with a partner to determine the best approach.

    1. Simply just copy and paste data into BC: Copy and paste data FAQ - Business Central | Microsoft Learn - You can go into a general journal in BC, copy a line and paste it in excel. Then you can use that as a "template" to paste data back into BC.

    3. Use a configuration package for that relevant table to import data. You would still need to copy data into the configuration package format but you can pick the order of the columns and also determine what columns to use.

Beyond these 3 methods there is also the option to build a custom import/XMLport but that would need to be done by a developer. This would be the automated approach but you would have to work with a BC partner/developer to have this work done.

    Thank you,

    Hi Sonny,

BC has standard import templates for most things - the easiest way is to go into BC yourself (or ask your customer to do it) and use the Configuration Packages feature. Go to page "Config. Packages" , add a new package for the table you need (for example G/L Journal lines which is Table 81) and then export the Excel template from there. That gives you the exact columns BC expects with the right field names, no guessing.

For journal entries specifically the key columns are Journal Template Name, Journal Batch Name, Line No, Posting Date, Document No, Account Type, Account No, Description, Amount - but the Config Package export will give you everything including mandatory fields.

This way your customer just maps their ERP output to that template and imports directly, no manual work.

Please mark this as verified if has heled you

    Hello Sonny,
There’s no single standard Dynamics template for this, because the format depends on what they’re importing, so the safest approach is to have the customer export the exact Excel template from Business Central first—usually from Configuration Packages, a journal, or a budget page—and then build your ERP export to match that file exactly. That gives you the right columns, order, and required fields up front, and Microsoft specifically says not to move or change those columns, so that’s the best way to get it right the first time without manual cleanup.
