Planning Worksheet Skips BOM Components with Decimal Qty. per and Qty. Rounding Precision

Hello everyone,

I am facing an issue in Business Central related to Production BOM, Quantity per, and Quantity Rounding Precision.

We have a finished item with a Production BOM. Some BOM components are measured in inches/feet, and their Quantity per values have high decimal precision, for example:

Quantity per = 1.57813

For one component item, the Quantity Rounding Precision is set to:

Qty. Rounding Precision = 0.25

When we create a Firm Planned Production Order, the component quantity is calculated and visible under Production Order Components with decimal values.

However, when we run Calculate Plan from the Planning Worksheet to generate purchase suggestions, Business Central shows:

All items are available and no planning lines are created.

But we expect planning lines to be created for the component requirement.

My question is: can this happen because the BOM Quantity per value, such as 1.57813, does not match the item’s Quantity Rounding Precision of 0.25?

I would like to understand:

  1. How does Business Central use Quantity Rounding Precision during MRP / Planning Worksheet calculation?
  2. Does planning round the production order component demand before calculating net requirements?
  3. Should we adjust BOM quantities to match 0.25 multiples, or should we change the item’s rounding precision to support higher decimal quantities?
  4. For inch/feet-based items, what is the best practice for UOM and rounding precision setup?

Any guidance on the technical reason and recommended setup would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I think you may be assuming something about rounding precision field that may not match the system logic.  There is an article, linked below, from Microsoft that explains it in more detail.  Below is the chart to visually explain what is in the article:

Regarding the planning suggestion, without knowing your available inventory it is nearly impossible to determine if the system should have made a suggestion.  At the most basic level, make sure a Reordering Policy is defined, or the system will ignore the Item/SKU.

    Hello,
Yes, rounding can affect the quantity that planning evaluates, but a BOM quantity like 1.57813 not being a clean multiple of 0.25 should not by itself make Business Central completely ignore the component demand; it should normally round/plan according to the item/UOM/planning setup and then net demand against inventory and existing supply. I would first check the component item setup: Reordering Policy must not be blank, Replenishment System should be Purchase/Prod/Transfer as needed, the Planning Worksheet date range must include the production demand date, and if you use locations, verify SKU / Components at Location / Missing SKU Planning Policy because planning can behave differently by location. For inch/feet materials, best practice is to make the base UOM the smallest practical unit you manage, keep BOM quantities as accurate as real consumption, and set rounding precision/order multiple based on how you physically buy or consume the material; do not force BOM quantities to 0.25 unless the business really consumes/issues only in quarter increments. Microsoft also recommends small planning rounding precision in manufacturing when rounding waste can create material/cost impact.

    Hi,
the rounding precision isn't what stops your planning lines. It only rounds the suggested supply quantity, it won't block a line just because 1.57813 is not a multiple of 0.25. So I'd look somewhere else first.

That "all items available" message usually means the net requirement is already covered, or the item has no reordering policy. Check the Reordering Policy field on the item card, or on the SKU if you plan per location — if it's blank, MRP has nothing to suggest even when demand exists. Worth checking too there isn't on-hand or an open supply already covering the component.
On the inch/feet side, with values like 1.57813 I would set Rounding Precision small, something like 0.00001, so planning doesn't eat the decimals. 0.25 is too coarse for that kind of item, and it'll round your real demand away.

Which version are you on, and do you plan per location with SKUs?

Glad to help - follow up if anything is unclear.
