Unable to Copy/Paste Journal Lines (Version 28)

Hi everyone,

I’m currently facing an issue in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (Version 28) where I am no longer able to copy and paste journal lines.

Version: W1 28.0 (Platform 28.0.49812.0 + Application 28.0.46665.49824)

Copy and Paste is working fine in Sandbox Version: W1 27.5 (Platform 27.0.49565.0 + Application 27.5.46862.49939)

Issues Observed:
Copy/paste within journal lines does not work giving errors
Copying from Excel and pasting into journals fails with errors

I have tried in
Different journal batches
Browser refresh / different browser

Questions:
Has anyone else experienced this issue in v28?

Thanks!
I have the same question (0)

    Hi
    Because this is a newly reported and currently unanswered bug in the Business Central Version 28 update, the immediate solution is to bypass the UI copy/paste function entirely and instead use the "Edit in Excel" add-in to publish your lines back to the system, or use a Configuration Package to import the entries until Microsoft releases a hotfix.

    HI,

    This is not a v28 bug. Your error messages (e.g., "40000 is not acceptable for Document Type", "G/L Account is not an acceptable value for Amount") clearly show that values are landing in the wrong columns.

    Excel paste in BC is positional — it simply drops values left-to-right in the exact order the columns appear on your screen. The upgrade to v28 likely cleared your page personalizations or shifted the default column order, which explains why your v27.5 sandbox still works perfectly.

    Here is the fix:

    1. Open the General Journal and click the gear icon to Personalize.

    2. Reorder or add/remove the columns in BC to exactly match the column order in your Excel file (or vice versa).

    3. Click "Done" to save the personalization (you can also save it as a View to lock it in).

    4. Make sure to paste your data into a completely empty row.

    This will solve the validation errors!

    I would try copying data out of BC and into excel and then trying again as it seems you're trying to paste an incorrect value in the document type field.

    If the issue persists with correct data and can be validated in a Sandbox V28 environment i'd report the error to Microsoft support. You can read more on submitting issues here: Technical support overview - Business Central | Microsoft Learn

    Looking at the excel file and the BC GL journal all my columns lined up. I added a column after the date in my copy and paste excel as I notice everything seemed to be off a column.  It is working now for my copy and paste after adding the column.  It seems like there is an additional column now that was not there in the previous version and cannot be seen.

    When using this feature, please try to minimize the number of columns displayed. This will reduce a lot of problems.

    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

    Hi everyone,

    Thank you all for your responses.

    @Gregory Mavrogeorgis @Teagen Boll
    I understand your point regarding column layout and personalization, but that does not seem to be the issue in this case.

    What I am testing is:

    Copying an existing journal line within BC and pasting it into a new blank line in the same journal.
    This immediately gives validation errors.

    I also tried:

    1. Copying a journal line from BC into Excel
    2. Adding a new row in Excel
    3. Pasting the same data back into BC

    The data aligns correctly, but BC still throws validation errors.

    @YUN ZHU
    This behavior is not limited to Journals. I also tested copy/paste on pages with only a few fields, such as Business Posting Groups, and the same issue occurs.

    @RH-06052058-0
    Great finding. Adding a blank column after the Posting Date column does seem to work as a temporary workaround when copying through Excel.

    However, copy/paste within the same journal in BC still fails, so it does appear there may be an issue in v28 that needs a fix from Microsoft.

    @AndrewThomas81
    Thanks for confirming you were able to replicate the issue in v28 as well. That helps validate this is not environment-specific.

    Thanks again everyone for testing and sharing your findings.

    Copy and pasting back from Excel with blank values column after first column eliminates the validation errors caused by mismatch of layout.

    Kind Regards

    Hello,
    this looks less like a browser/cache issue and more like a column alignment / paste validation issue introduced or exposed in v28: Microsoft says pasted rows must have the exact same columns in the same order, and each pasted value is validated against the target field; in your screenshot BC is trying to put values into the wrong fields, for example 40000 into Document Type, 40000 into Account Type, and G/L Account into Amount (LCY), so the pasted data is shifted/mapped incorrectly. I would first reset personalization on the General Journals page, remove/re-add columns, try with the standard layout only, and paste only visible columns in the exact order shown; if it still happens in standard W1 28.0 with no customizations/extensions, raise it to Microsoft as a possible v28 regression and include the screenshots plus the working v27.5 comparison.
    Regards,
    Oussama Sabbouh
