Timeline notes headline styling (bold / font size) – possible without PCF?

Hi everyone,

I have a requirement regarding the Dynamics 365 timeline (Unified Interface).

As shown in the screenshot, we would like the first line of a note (the “headline”) to appear more prominent – ideally **bold and slightly larger**.

Is there any way to achieve this for both existing and newly created timeline entries using standard configuration or a workaround?

Or is building a custom PCF control the only viable option?

Most of our entries are system-generated, so manual formatting is not practical.

Thanks in advance!

    – Timeline Notes Headline Styling
In the Dynamics 365 Unified Interface, the Timeline control (used for Notes, Activities, Posts, etc.) does not currently expose direct configuration options for rich text formatting or font styling (such as bold or font size changes) within note content. The rendering of timeline items is handled by the standard control, and the text is displayed as plain text.
    🧩 Available Options
    1. Custom PCF Control
      • The most flexible approach is to build a custom PCF control that replaces or extends the default timeline rendering.
      • You can define custom HTML/CSS for the note body and apply conditional formatting (e.g., bold for the first line).
      • This allows consistent styling for both existing and new notes.
    2. Custom HTML Web Resource
      • If full PCF development isn’t desired, you can embed a read-only HTML web resource that displays formatted note content using JavaScript and CSS.
      • This would require fetching note data via Web API and rendering it manually.
    3. Server-side Formatting Logic
      • For system-generated notes, you could insert simple markup (like Markdown or HTML tags) into the note text when creating it via automation (Power Automate or plugin).
      • However, the timeline control will still render it as plain text unless replaced by a custom renderer.
⚙️ Not Possible via Standard Configuration
    • There is no out-of-the-box setting or form customization that changes font size or boldness in timeline notes.
    • The Timeline control does not support CSS overrides or formatting rules through the form editor.
    💡Recommendation
If consistent visual emphasis is important (e.g., for system-generated notes), implementing a lightweight PCF control is the most maintainable and user-friendly solution. It ensures styling consistency without manual intervention.

    Hi,

Microsoft documents note timeline configuration and rich text editor setup here:Add and configure the timeline control in Power Apps - Power Apps | Microsoft Learn
Add the rich text editor control to a model-driven app - Power Apps | Microsoft Learn

No, standard D365 timeline configuration cannot make only the first line of a note bold/larger automatically. System-generated notes: create the note body with HTML:

    <strong><span style="font-size:16px;">Headline</span></strong><br>
    Normal note text

Existing notes: run a one-time script/Power Automate/plugin to convert the first line into HTML. If HTML rendering is not reliable or you need full control: build a custom PCF control, avoid JavaScript/CSS DOM hacks because they are unsupported and can break after Microsoft updates.

    Thanks,
