What are the real-world challenges and best practices of using Dynamics 365 for Manufacturing?

We are evaluating Microsoft Dynamics 365 (Finance, Supply Chain, and Business Central Manufacturing) for a multi-site manufacturing environment with complex BOMs, mixed-mode production, subcontracting, and high transaction volumes.

I’d like to hear from professionals who have implemented or supported Dynamics 365 for manufacturing scenarios:

  • How does it perform with large BOMs, heavy production postings, and frequent MRP runs?
  • Any limitations with shop floor integration, MES/IoT connectivity, or barcode scanning?
  • How reliable is master planning and capacity scheduling in high-mix environments?
  • Did you rely mostly on standard features or significant customization?
  • Any common integration pain points with PLM, WMS, or third-party systems?
  • Lessons learned, pitfalls to avoid, or best practices you’d recommend?

Looking for practical, hands-on experiences rather than marketing insights. Thanks in advance!

    Hi talktoaliveallen,

Can you clarify if you are really considering to use both Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (for Finance and SCM) and Dynamics 365 Business Central (for Manufacturing)?

Please clarify the scenario. Is it only Dynamics 365 F&O, only Dynamics 365 Business Central, or best of breed from both solutions?

    Hi ,

First of all for a multi-site manufacturing environment with complex BOMs, mixed-mode production, subcontracting, and high transaction volumes I recommend using D365FO. Business Central (BC) is not meant for those scenarios.

    For your questions:
    • How does it perform with large BOMs, heavy production postings, and frequent MRP runs? -> Very well. Just remember to do a through out performance testing during the implementation project.
    • Any limitations with shop floor integration, MES/IoT connectivity, or barcode scanning? -> Integrations for manufacturing module are always heavy and complex so be prepared spend some time with those. Barcode scanning is supported and easy.
    • How reliable is master planning and capacity scheduling in high-mix environments? -> MRP in D365FO is very powerful and works really well if your parameters are in mint. Even with large volumes.
    • Did you rely mostly on standard features or significant customization? -> Standard can do most of the scenarios used in companies. There is always something that needs customization but processes should be designed that there's no need to do large scale customizations. Go with small customizations.
    • Any common integration pain points with PLM, WMS, or third-party systems? -> If using DMF, just remember that recurring batch jobs is not the best solution. Also avoid point-to-point integrations and use AIS in the middle.
    • Lessons learned, pitfalls to avoid, or best practices you’d recommend?
      • Use standard as much as you can.
      • Data must be in mint condition.
      • Do not implement old processes just because. Always question old processes and ask why.
      • Change management is the most important thing. Management needs to support the project in full.
