Connection to UAT environment from local Visual studio in Unified Dev environment

Hello,
There we have Dev, UAT and Prod D365FO environments hosted in Power platform admin center. I have downloaded visual studio on my laptop with all the required tools related to D365 Finance app. When I connect to my devops server, the AOT inside my local Visual studio is not showing any of the models present in my Devops project Repo. I tried to manually install the models using ModelUtil and it says the tool is not supported. Please share usefull links on detailed steps
Also, how can I connect my visual studio to UAT environment and debug an issue there. Is it even enabled currently?

Thanks

    Hi SKO,

When you have installed Visual Studio, you first need to install additional Power Platform tools and then connect to an online UDE environment. You can read more in the documentation:

If you have Visual Studio configured for UDE, go to Dynamics 365 > Configure metadata and make sure that Folder for your custom metadata is the folder that you used the in TFVC workspace mapping for you models.

Thanks Andre and Martin for your support.
Here is the background for my issue.
Team had 3 environments in LCS - Dev, UAT and Production with Properly configured devops Version control system.

The team has built and used a model in Dev environment for building some functionality. They have created deployable package from the dev environment itself and used the package on UAT and Prod environments. For some reason they have deleted the dev VM
and only have backup of the model and the deployable package. Now with the arrival of UDE we are only left with UAT and the PROD environments in sync (code perspective). The version control system only have empty models, maybe they only checked in the descriptor file.
Please suggest me on how I can get the code copy with same state that is in Prod/UAT envrironments.
I tried to import the model files from the backup into my local visual studio but it didnt support/recognize the "ModelUtil.exe" command at all. I am worried if I could ever recover the code at all.

    Thanks

If it's true that "the version control system only have empty models", then it explains why your model haven't been downloaded from there. You can't download something that doesn't exist there.

But you said you have a backup of the models. If it means source code, then you can put that to PackagesLocalDirectory and add those files to source control.

By the way, you'd never get into this situation if your process was correct. Deployable packages should be created from code in source control (by a build pipeline), not locally on a DEV environment. This guarantees that you delivery exactly the same code that you have in source control, and you'd have found immediately that you didn't have you model in there.

Please tell us more about the backup and how you're trying to restore it.

Thanks Martin. It was already too late by the time I have joined and I was only left with the backup of VM.
The backup has files with extension .axmodel - probably have exported the model file using powershell/cmd
Also has deployable package that is created using the dev environment itself.
I am worried the objects cannot be retrieved, please let me know.

I tried to import the .axmodel files on my local visual studio but ran into error saying it is not supported.
Also tried to import the deployable package back into the visual studio but didnt have luck

    Thanks

Deployable packages normally contains just binaries, not source code, therefore you won't get source code from there.

.axmodel files sound much more promising. Please tell us how you tried to import them, at what point it failed and what exactly the error message said. Please realize that we can't help you if you don't give us enough information about your problem.

Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that the backup contains the same code that has actually been deployed to production.

On the machine which has my visual studio I am running the below command using cmd as administrator to import the .axmodel(model file) and run into this below error message

Do you get the same error if you call modelutil without parameters? In other words, is it about modelutil itself or its parameters?

I ran the command without parameters and got same error. It's not recognizing the command itself

I have tried only with ModelUtil.exe

How do you start the command prompt? What is the version there? (You should see it on the top.)

I don't see your problem on my machine. The screenshot also shows the version:
