Has there been a recent update to Dynamics 365 Sales Enterprise?

Previously, I could close a deal as a win without creating a quote.

Is there a way to revert to that functionality or to have the "Close as a Win" button appear again without creating a purchase order?

No, there has not been a widely announced change that universally requires a Quote or Purchase Order before an Opportunity can be won in Dynamics 365 Sales Enterprise.
If the "Close as Won" button has disappeared or you're being forced through a Quote/Order process, it is usually due to one of the following:
    • Sales Process configuration changes
    • Opportunity Close settings
    • Business Process Flow (BPF) customization
    • Command Bar (Ribbon) customization
    • Security Role changes
    • Sales Hub app updates or customizations
Since Dynamics 365 Sales normally allows winning an Opportunity without creating a Quote or Purchase Order, investigate:
    • Business Process Flow changes
    • Command Bar customizations
    • Security role permissions
    • Custom plugins/workflows/JavaScript
The Command Checker is usually the fastest way to determine why the "Close as Won" button is no longer appearing.

No, there hasn't been a recent Dynamics 365 Sales update that generally requires a Quote or Order before you can Close as Won.

If the "Close as Won" button has disappeared, it's usually due to:

    • A customization (Command Designer/Ribbon Workbench).
    • Security role changes.
    • A Business Process Flow or custom logic enforcing Quote/Order creation.
    • Active quotes associated with the opportunity.

In standard Dynamics 365 Sales, you should still be able to close an opportunity as Won without creating a Quote or Order. Check your customizations and command bar configuration to see whether the button has been hidden or replaced.
