Item Tracing not drilling down in production Orders

Hello experts!

I am running an item tracing for some item batches and the trace is stopping when it reaches a production Order line. As you can see the last 2 items have a batch and I can start a trace from these lines in the trace, but I cannot see the detail below.

When I start the trace from Node, I can correctly see all the data related to the tracing of the nodes that are below the production Order Lines

If I run this on a contoso environment it goes below the production order lines level. Does anyone knows what could be the reason why my tracing stops at the production order line level?

Is this the reason I am not seeing the data below the Production Order line?

Thanks in advance

Do you have circularity in the formula? I have seen the tracer doing funny things if there is circularity in the formula's (I.e. you are producing soap, but some of the final product is a part of the formula to act as a catalyst).

The issue you are experiencing—where Item Tracing stops at the Production Order Line level—is likely due to tracing setup or system configuration differences between your environment and the Contoso demo environment. Based on the information you provided, here’s how you can troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

    Possible Causes and Solutions

    1. Verify Item Tracing Configuration

In your environment, ensure that Item Tracing is correctly set up to allow full drill-down:
    • Navigate to Inventory Management > Setup > Item Tracing Parameters
    • Check that all tracking dimensions (batch, serial, site, warehouse, license plate) are properly enabled for tracing.

    2. Check the BOM or Formula Structure

Item tracing can go one level up or down in the BOM or formula structure, as mentioned in the documentation:
"You can trace one level up or down in a BOM or formula. If you trace raw materials, you see the finished product and co-products. However, tracing a co-product does not include the finished product."
    • If your raw material is used in a multi-level BOM, verify that the lower-level production orders are correctly linked.
    • Ensure that co-products and by-products are properly included in the BOM structure if applicable.

    3. Check Production Order Status

    • If the Production Order is not ended, the system might not fully trace consumption.
    • Go to Production Control > All Production Orders and ensure that the status is at least Reported as Finished or Ended.

    4. Validate Inventory Transactions & Dimensions

    • Navigate to Inventory Management > Inquiries and Reports > Tracking Dimensions > Batches
    • Ensure that the batch and serial numbers match between production consumption and output transactions.
    • If transactions are missing, try running inventory recalculation from Cost Management > Inventory Closing and Adjustment.

    5. Verify ‘Trace from Node’ Behavior

Since you mentioned that using “Trace from Node” correctly displays the data, this indicates that the data exists but is not automatically retrieved in the initial trace.
    • This could be due to missing or incorrect tracing configuration or data visibility settings in your environment.
    • Try running the trace with different filter settings, ensuring no restrictive criteria are limiting the results.

    Final Recommendation

If your Contoso environment works as expected, but your live/test environment does not:
    • Compare Item Tracing settings between the two environments.
    • Verify that production order statuses and inventory transactions are correctly recorded.
    • Ensure tracking dimensions (batch, serial, license plate) are properly assigned and posted.
    • If the issue persists, try running database synchronization to update inventory transactions.
