Quality order uses default receipt location instead of actual physical receipt location

Hi Team

We are using multiple physical receipt locations in the warehouse. To support this, we have configured one virtual location and mapped it as the Default receipt location at the warehouse level.
During receiving, we use PO Pick and Put to move inventory from the virtual receipt location to the actual physical receipt location where the goods are physically stored.
We are also using Quality orders. After registration or product receipt, the system automatically creates a quality order. However, the location on the quality order is always set to the Default receipt location (virtual location), even though the goods are physically present in a different receipt location.
Because of this, the quality order does not reflect the actual physical location of the material, which creates confusion for the quality team.
My questions are:

Why does the system take the Default receipt location instead of the actual physical receipt location?
Is there any standard setup or configuration that allows the quality order to capture the real receipt location?
Or is this standard D365 Finance and Operations behavior by design?

Hello Shubham,

I think the main reason is that many companies have a default receipt area. Dynamics 365 SCM is used by many companies, and therefore it is designed to support multiple and diverse organizations.

I believe there is no configuration option to change the default receipt location for a quality order. The default receipt location is always inherited from the warehouse.

In other words, this is standard behavior in Dynamics 365 SCM. However, you might consider raising an idea on the Ideas portal.

Hi,

You are not using the quality management module along advance warehouse as designed for your requirement.

Prerequisites

1 - Item is part of quality sampling and all quality management setups are done.

2 - Enable quality order for warehouse process is enabled in warehouse master

3 - Location directives are setup for work type Quality item sampling and Quality orders.

Now when you receive items

1 - Use mobile device to receive items. System will check the Quality item sampling work type location directive and will decide the put location. Ideally QC location as items are moved to QC location.

2 - When step 1 was done a quality order was also generated.

3 - Quality order is processed and validated

4 - System generates another put away work to move items form QC location to final location. The final location is determined by system by using location directives of work type 'Quality orders'. Here you should make one setup for Quality order pass and one setup for quality order fail. Normally for quality order fail scenario location 'Blocked' is selected and for quality order 'Pass' scenario location normal good location are added in setup.

5 - Using the Quality order work workers are instructed on mobile device to pick items from QC location and move them to final location.

So, everything is real and in system each and every movement as it happens in warehouse before and after quality. You can also control the inventory status based on quality test results. It's a very capable module.

if you do not do any of above setups than system will take default receipt location.

Thank you, this works with your approach.

However, in most cases we receive serialized items, so I am attempting to receive all serial numbers under a single license plate (Screen-1). Based on this, I was expecting the system to generate only one “Quality item sampling” type work order at the license plate level.

Instead, the system is generating multiple work orders by splitting the quantity, possibly due to the presence of serial numbers. Additionally, I observed that if the system is splitting the work order based on serial numbers, the serial numbers are not being reserved against the work order and also do not appear on the work order (Screen-2).

We are using below reservation hierarchy in our business.

My ultimate goal is that the business does not want quality orders to be generated serial-wise. Regardless of whether serials or batches are involved, the system should generate a single quality order based on quantity. After validation, based on the quality result, the inventory should move to the appropriate location. Throughout this entire process, I want to maintain only one license plate, created at the time of registration.

Could you please help clarify whether this is standard behavior or if any setup is missing?
